Cartridge Recycling

Why Should I Recycle Printer Cartridges?

Placing old printer cartridges into landfills can cause problems for the environment.

Did you know it takes more than 2 pints of oil to create a new toner cartridge shell? Wow, if you multiply 2 pints of oil times the number of home printers and business printers and all of the ink and toner that they consume...well that's...that's a lot of OIL! And the waste, it takes over 1000 years for the cartridges to decompose in a landfill.

Although, currently the U.S. recycles 28% of its waste - a rate that has almost doubled in the past 15 years, only 5% of empty printer cartridges are being recycled. This is terrible news for future generations as 95% of printer cartridges are discarded and end up in landfills.

At Stewart Business Systems, we care about the environment. That is why we've instituted a recycling program that takes your used or empty printer cartridges and disposes of them properly. We want to do our best to help prevent further harm to our environment through educating our customers about the necessity of recycling printer inkjet and laser toner cartridges. When you participate in this program, you are helping to:

  • Prevent Pollution
  • Keep cartridge waste out of landfills

TO PREVENT POLLUTION....

Some kinds of toner dust contain hazardous materials. Inkjet inks can also contain a range of chemicals that are harmful to the environment. These materials pose no threat while they are contained within the cartridge.

However, these pollutants can escape when cartridges are pulled apart in poorly managed refilling or recycling operations or when dumped cartridges start to deteriorate in landfill. Toner dust is also extremely fine (5 – 15 microns), so it can easily leach from landfill into nearby waterways, ground water and ultimately the oceans.

TO KEEP CARTRIDGE WASTE OUT OF LANDFILL....

Landfill is not a long term solution - it just leaves the problem for future generations to deal with. Some cartridges can leak toner dust and residue ink in landfill, contributing to pollution.

The plastics and metals are not readily biodegradable. They will lie around for years in landfill. When cartridges are recycled these inherently valuable metals and plastics, which would other wise end up in landfill, are recovered and made useful again.

RECYCLING PRINT CARTRIDGES HELPS THE ENVIRONMENT

What you can do to help?

You can make a difference in the well being of the environment and the preservation of future generations by simply recycling your empty inkjet and laser toner cartridges. Working with our partner, core recycling, they will assist you in providing a prepaid recycle box. Simply return the empty cartridges to them and we will ensure that they are reconditioned for future use or disposed of in a proper manner*.
